What is a
Newborn Care Specialist?
A Newborn Care Specialist (NCS) is an individual trained and skilled in newborn care. She provides unique expertise in all aspects of newborn care, parental education and support. An NCS often has extensive knowledge in caring for multiples or premature infants, and is well versed in establishing good eating and sleeping habits to set the optimal stage for sleep conditioning, with the goal of getting the newborn to sleep through the night and take age appropriate naps as soon as is healthy and possible for that individual newborn. An NCS is also well versed in supporting family values and understands the importance of a child having healthy, educated, and empowered parents.
What is a Doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. A certified doula has taken a training program and passed an exam in how to help pregnant women and their families during this exciting but challenging experience.
What does an NCS do?
The primary role of a Newborn Care Specialist is to provide assistance and education after the parents bring the baby home from the hospital. Many times, this help will include scheduling, feeding, sleep training, help with breast feeding and more. During the daytime a Newborn Care Specialist will provide similar care and also strive to create a nurturing and stimulating environment for the baby during waking hours. Both day and night Newborn Care Specialists document the baby’s patterns and keep a log of sleeping, feeding and changing times to assist in transitioning the baby to a regular schedule.
What does a Doula do?
Doulas can perform different roles, depending on your needs. Labor or birth doulas provide continuous care during labor. Birth doulas support women, birthing people and families who are planning all kinds of birth, from planned caesarean birth or early epidural to home water birth. Postpartum doulas support the new mom during the first few weeks after birth. They help with care and feeding of the baby and household tasks. Sometimes postnatal doulas are booked antenatally, sometimes only when a family find they are struggling or feel the need for more support.
